Our first class meeting will be on Wednesday August 12 in Calloway 205. The class meets face to face on Mondays in Calloway 205. Initially, our plan is to meet virtually on Wednesdays (starting on August 19) from 11:00am to 12:15pm. for the first few weeks of the semester. This may be subject to change as the semester progresses. A complete listing of our meeting dates is provided in the class schedule in CourseDen. During most Wednesday class meetings, students will be making short presentations on assigned topics. When online, the Wednesday meetings will be held using Collaborate Ultra, the real time conferencing tool in CourseDen. The link for online class meetings is
If the university requires that we go fully online at sometime during the semester, we will continue to meet at the regular class times (both Monday and Wednesday meetings will be online).
All office hours will be held virtually using Collaborate Ultra (a real time video conferencing tool in CourseDen). Virtual office hours will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:00-5:00pm and on Thursdays from 10:00am-12noon. I can also meet virtually in Collaborate Ultra with students on an individual basis at mutually available times. If we are directed by the university administration to meet only online at some time during the semester, the office hour schedule may be adjusted.
In addition to the course textbook, the other principal content for the course is contained in the course lectures notes (PowerPoint slides) which will be posted in CourseDen. In addition to a summary of the lecture presentations, these notes will also include a listing of the required reading assignments from the course text as well as links to other required outside readings/podcasts/videos. The notes will also contain a number of practice problems which will help you better understand the course material.

The overall objective of this course is for you to learn basic economic concepts, specifically macroeconomics, and more about the economic system in which we live. To this end, upon completion of the course, the expectation is that students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of macroeconomic concepts such as gross domestic product, inflation, and unemployment
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of international economics including concepts such as exchange rates and net exports
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the banking system, the impact of the Federal Reserve on the economy, and government taxation and spending policy
- Be able to analyze at a basic level the effectiveness of fiscal and monetary policy in combating inflation or unemployment
Grading in the course will be based on your performance on completed assignments, two online tests, participation, and an oral presentation. The assignments will be composed of short answer questions, graphical or other problems based on class lectures/discussions summarized in the powerpoints and on assigned material (textbook readings and other assigned materials). There are six (6) scheduled assignments (see the course schedule in CourseDen for due dates). Each assignment counts for 6% of your point total (total of 36% for assignments). The assignments will be posted in CourseDen. You will also submit your responses to the questions in each assignment in CourseDen. In addition, there will be two online tests. I anticipate that these tests will be mainly composed of multiple choice questions. The tests will be timed and will be taken in CourseDen. Each of these tests will be worth 17% of your grade (total of 34% for tests). The times/dates for the tests are listed in the course schedule. Participation points (15% of your grade) will be mainly determined by the quality of the class presentations on topics assigned by the instructor. These presentations will be typically 2-3 minutes long. The final determinant of your grade will a 8-10 minute presentation on the macroeconomics conditions of a country (other than the U.S.). This presentation will count for 15% of your grade (more details are provided below).

Each student in the class will be making an 8-10 minute oral presentation on the macroeconomics conditions of a country (other than the U.S.). In addition, you will need to prepare a powerpoint slide presentation. Each student must select a different country and research the macroeconomic conditions of that country. Countries will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Your country selection must be made no later than November 9. These presentations will be made on Wednesday, December 2 (online in Collaborate Ultra). Additional details on the country presentations will be provided later in the semester. The powerpoint presentation will become part of your Honors Program E-Portfolio.

UWG Email Policy
University of West Georgia students are provided a MyUWG e-mail account. The University considers this account to be an official means of communication between the University and the student. The purpose of the official use of the student e-mail account is to provide an effective means of communicating important university related information to UWG students in a timely manner. It is the student’s responsibility to check his or her email.
Credit Hour Policy
The University of West Georgia grants one semester hour of credit for work equivalent to a minimum of one hour (50 minutes) of in-class or other direct faculty instruction AND two hours of student work outside of class per week for approximately fifteen weeks. For each course, the course syllabus will document the amount of in-class (or other direct faculty instruction) and out-of-class work required to earn the credit hour(s) assigned to the course. Out-of-class work will include all forms of credit-bearing activity, including but not limited to assignments, readings, observations, and musical practice. Where available, the university grants academic credit for students who verify via competency-based testing, that they have accomplished the learning outcomes associated with a course that would normally meet the requirements outlined above (e.g. AP credit, CLEP, and departmental exams).

Proctored Exams/Online Instruction: Students should be aware and plan ahead for the possibility of having to complete all courses and/or exams online or in a proctored environment. This means talking with your instructors about what minimum technical requirements (software and hardware) will be required should your class move online or a student's personal needs dictate. This also includes making plans for internet access at whatever location participation may occur.
Virtual or in-person proctored exams, if your instructor should require them, may result in an additional cost to the student. Please discuss these details with your instructor or see the information provided here.
Face Coverings: Effective July 15, 2020, University System of Georgia institutions, including the University of West Georgia, will require all faculty, staff, students, and visitors to wear an appropriate face covering while inside campus facilities/buildings where six feet social distancing may not always be possible. Face covering use will be in addition to and is not a substitute for social distancing.
Face coverings are not required in campus outdoor settings where social distancing requirements are met. Anyone not using a face covering when required will be asked to wear one or must leave the area.
Reasonable accommodations may be made for those who are unable to wear a face covering for documented health reasons.
